It’s always great to start the new season and blow those rugby cobwebs away, but to start the season with such a great bunch of kids, in such lovely weather, was an added bonus!

For the new members of our squad, the initial weeks of the season are all about getting used to a real rugby ball instead of a foam ball, and starting to develop the concept of teamwork - something ERRFC are focussed on as a club, and will form the backbone of the season.

Some of our new parents might be wondering quite why we do certain games and drills; hopefully it will all become apparent in later weeks as our squad transforms into rugby playing teams. The main aim at the moment skills-wise is to get the kids handling the ball, passing/catching confidently, and running into space. This is following the RFU’s guidelines of promoting a running game, with minimal stoppages to recycle the ball, and kids scoring loads of tries. If any parents have any questions about any of this, please feel free to ask Andy.

So, back to this week’s session. It was great to see the kids get down to some good work and they all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Usually, it’s quite easy at the start of the season to pick out some trophy winners, but there were so many good performances, we struggled a bit this week!

We had an extra “trophy” this week; an ERRFC water bottle. This went to Joe for his good work, and looking like he hadn’t had the summer off!

Scary (named after it’s donor, Steve Carey, went to a new Under 7. For lots of good work and showing good spirit, this week’s Scarey trophy went to Caitlyn! Well done!! (And apologies for any mis-spellings, I haven’t seen the register at time of writing).

The big trophy also went to a new Under 7. HE looked rather surprised when I called his name out, but Harry had done some great work and tried really hard all the way through. Well done, Harry!!
