Friday night under lights

Friday night saw our 3rd XV team travel to Swanage and Wareham and we were lively and up for the game. The opposition were a large set of players, populated with experienced and gnarly players who were full of know how.

The game kicked off and very quickly, we were into our stride, moving the ball well. Taking into contact or breakdown only when necessary. The forwards rucked well, and our 9, 10 partnership very quickly began to dictate play. The first try came after quite a dominant ball carry by our forwards. The ball went down our line through most hands and our full back Dan Parker went over for the opening try with the conversion kicked by the reliable boot of Corben Hills. This was swiftly followed by tries from Brad Evan and Paddy Johnson and both were converted by Corben Hills. We unfortunately lost Mike Price, our main lineout jumper with a calf injury. The big Swanage and Wareham pack tried to front up and use their bulk, but our boys weren't intimidated and responded well playing attractive rugby and refusing to get sucked into the rucks. Instead, we opted to post guards and tackle well. This forced mistakes allowing us to regain the ball and set up another attack. Brad Thomas was on fine form crashing his way through defenders, but just as importantly he was on hand in the next attack in support, taking the final pass to score under the posts, which was again converted by Corben Hills, who then scored our next try. Shortly after, Mike Moody got his name on the score sheet after a marauding run, which was again converted by Corben Hills. Brad Thomas then bagged himself another try with brutal ball carrying and again this was converted by Corben Hills. The half was closed out by another try and conversion by Corben Hills. Swanage and Wareham then managed to cross our line after some sustained ruck and maul work, allowing one of their backs to dart over the line near the posts. They converted the try, making the half time score 54 - 7.

The half-time talk by captain Paul Morrish resulted in the whole team redoubling their efforts to not let the opposition score again. After restarting, we continued in the same manner with further tries by Alex Day, Dan Parker, Jake Keep, Paddy Johnson, Tyler Grant. Brad Thomas, and Paddy Johnson then scored their third tries and there were three more conversions from Corben Hills. The whole game was an excellent display of attack and superb support play by all. Some great runs by Lenny Lawson drew cheers of approval from our large travelling support. It was great to have them all there and better to be able to entertain. A fine performance and another impressive score for the club.
